If you’re in need of natural hair repair or therapy, you may want to look at the seeds from flax or more specifically, flaxseed oil. It has been used to treat everything from inflammatory disorders to infertility and is said to even promote hair growth.  Hair growth you may ask?

The power of flaxseed oil is encompassed in its omega-3 fatty acids which protect and repair cells.  There are two ways to incorporate flaxseed oil into your life.  It can be ingested, and it can be applied directly to the hair as a conditioner.

SuperFoodProfiles suggests that you shouldn’t start by taking large doses of flaxseed oil because large amounts of omega-3 can cause a negative reaction.  While liquid has better value, capsules are easier to control the dosage.

Week 1 – 1 gram with breakfast.  1 gram in the evening with dinner. Monitor how you feel.

Week 2 – 2 grams with breakfast or lunch. 2 grams with dinner.

Week 3 – 4-5 grams twice a day.

Up to 30 grams of flaxseed oil a day are recommended by some, but you should slowly work up to these doses by adding one or two grams a week to your morning and evening intake.

Since hair grows slowly be patient, but over several months you will hopefully see a positive change.

One way to see faster results it to apply a flaxseed oil mask once or twice a week. SuperFoodProfiles has a great description of how to do it.

1.     Wet hair in the shower and towel dry excess water.

2.     Pour a small amount of flax into your palm and message it over      your scalp.

3.     Comb through the oil in your hair, then wrap your hair in a towel for 15-20 minutes.

You can also use flaxseed to create a gel and use it as a styling aid.

Start making and using your own homemade flaxseed gel it will make your hair soft, shiny and moisturized.  Plus it’s cost effective, you can buy enough flax seeds for under $2.00 plus seeds can be used more that once. Each batch makes enough to last you several weeks.

As wonderful as flaxseed may seem, there are some conditions that require doctor approval before flaxseed oil should be used.

Have you used flaxseed oil?  Have you experienced any health benefits and has it helped your hair grow long and healthier?  I’d like to know.
